David and I hiked Mount Mitake today. I am starting to learn hiking here tends to involve a lot of very steep inclines. We took a cable car up to the starting point. Apparently there is also a hiking trail we could've taken but we didn't realize that until it was too late.

...and got a great view without any work...

Then the uphill climb with requisite huffing and puffing began. We passed through a small town with interesting architecture, like this thatched roof.

After about 30 minutes we reached the entrance Musashi Mitake Jinjya Shrine, a shinto shrine. It is more than 2000 years old.

Even the stairs going up were interesting.

Then we reached the main grounds of the shrine. Shinto shrines are where the kami (Shinto "gods") live.

It is said that a warrior hero is buried here.

This shrine is dedicated to wolves but no-one seems to know why.

After checking out the shrine we continued our hike to the "Rock Garden". The Rock Garden is tranquil area with moss covered rocks, a quaint stream and lots of small waterfalls.

We followed the path along the stream until we reached Ayahironotaki Falls. The falls are considered a scared Shinto place.

After spending some time at the falls we started the return hike back to the cable car. We stopped for a late lunch at a local restaurant on the way. I really enjoyed the hike to the Rock Garden and can see doing this hike frequently.
